The Social Media Behemoth – How can you use it in your favor?

#OK.. Whats this introduction? A word now can start with “#”.. meaning, Now it can be tracked in Twitter by addition of #in front of it.
A new social media interactive site which has sprouted. It has caught a lot of attention and now boasts more than a million users in very short time. It’s still a newbie compared to the Social Media Giant, Facebook which was started in 2004 by bunch of #Harvard grads, primarily Mark Zuckerberg.
Facebook has more than 800 million users. So why am I writing about this, there are thousands of blogs dedicated to Social Media already! I am writing because of my curiosity and I think I can give positive inputs for companies who want to use Social Media Networks for their growth.

Social Media Networks.. as the term suggests,  with a lot of contacts with each other, and not just contacts but solid network of people willing to spend time ‘posting’, ‘commenting’, ‘liking’, ‘sharing’ stuff of/with each other. Its a huge network and a huge opportunity for businesses.

Where is this goin?
I understand! this is all random but it will come out streamlined eventually.

What is this new thing?
Consider the following Virtual Case :

Suppose you run a superstore say “P-Mart“. You have an energetic staff which is in age range 20-40. You see about 100-200 customers  everyday and you have some good margins.
Now, How can you use social media to promote your business?
Best example is “Do it like Trader Joe’s and Spread it like Ford”.
Trader Joe’s has 80% of on shelf products as own. Now you dont need to have 80%, a mere 10% specialized good quality/ low price products can also kick in your effort. This is the base. The Good something! Any product, service or value proposition that you are sure customers will Like. So like that when you will give out a small receipt to them and print on it that link with our Facebook profile or Follow us on twitter!
They might consider doing it. I know, this statement has its limitations, what is majority of people who are buying stuff are old, or mature people without significant knowledge of social media!
You can change your strategy! What you will do?
Just introduce few products for working/educated adults like Organic food. Or if you can’t afford even that. Just tie up with Foursquare and give out some lucrative deals to attract teens/ working educated mass.
I know this sounds not that firm but This definitely works! The change is slow but soon you will see the effect. The one thing that is important is the patient. It’s a virtue if used wisely.
You can start with the employees, give them some new news feed about the sales forecast, or motivate them with good speeches/one liners through Twitter or Facebook pages. Convey them news, announce birthdays, any special occasions. Mix it up and employees and through them customers will start on the vibe and plus the discounts are lucrative.

Why do you want to do this?
Because its good publicity and good way to generate repo. It’s not going to waste and it takes very little time out of your schedule.
Once the marketing gets on-going, you can cut back on your real marketing expenses!
Ford, is using the social media scene very interestingly, they are not only stressing on how good their products are but also on how environmentally responsible they are and what are they doing to help world outside of their business domain.
